What Does HVAC Stand For?

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. The aim of HVAC system is to provide thermal comfort and an acceptable indoor air quality.

How should I select an appropriate HVAC Technician / Contractor?

Always work with certified and reputable dealers who employ service technicians who are certified by manufacturers to handle refrigerants used in air conditioners. If your air conditioner contains alternative refrigerants, the service technician should be trained in their use.

Purchase, Installation, Maintenance, Repair and Replacement of HVAC equipment is expensive and as such due diligence should be carried out before selecting a contractor to handle any of the aspect. Ensure the contractor has qualified technicians who are properly trained for the particular unit and possess long years of excellent service delivery in HVAC.

How does Air Conditioning work?

Air conditioners take heat from inside space and send it outside through an interrelated system of five parts:

Air conditioning and refrigeration are similar in operating principle; both are achieved through the removal of heat. Heat can be removed through radiation, convection, or conduction. Refrigeration conduction media such as water, air, ice, and chemicals are referred to as refrigerants.

Air conditioners use chemicals (refrigerant) that easily convert from a gas to a liquid and back again. This chemical is used to transfer heat from the air inside of a home to the outside air.

Why do I need to maintain my HVAC System regularly?

Regular maintenance helps your heating and cooling system operate at peak levels and improve indoor air quality. It helps keep the system working as intended by the manufacturer.

In addition to changing my filters, what maintenance should I do on my heater and/or air conditioner?

Most maintenance should be performed only by a qualified service technician. But the following ‘DIY’ assures optimal performance:

  • Keep ground mounted outdoor units clean of debris, clutter & weeds; they can reduce the airflow to the units.
  • Use caution with weed trimmers around the unit to prevent damaging control wiring.
  • Keep pets away from the unit for urine can cause expensive damage.
How often should maintenance be done on HVAC System?

Maintenance schedules are normally specified by manufacturers. The interval between maintenance can also be determined by frequency of usage, environmental conditions and years of usage.

How are the sizing capacities of heating and cooling systems measured?

Heating and Cooling systems sizing is based on B.T.U.H (British Thermal Units Per Hour) Air Conditioning & Heat Pumps are also rated in tonnage. 12,000 BTUH equals one (1) ton. Residential systems can range from 1 to 5 tons.

How do I know if my A/C unit is big enough?

The capacity of the A/C unit is of utmost importance. It is necessary to avoid under performance and over performance so as not to incur more utility bill.

What do I do if I can’t afford a new HVAC System?

My air conditioning unit is situated in the sun, if I build a shade over it, will it work?

Outdoor air conditioning equipment is made for installation in the weather, rain or shine. Constructing a shade is not advisable, if your shade restricts the air flow to the outdoor coils in any way, it will cost more to cool your home/office and probably shorten the life of your unit due to recycling of heated air.

What regular maintenance should be done on HVAC equipment?

Regular maintenance should involve cleaning the internal & external units of the equipment; lubricating all moving parts that require lubrication; replacement of worn out parts; replenishment of the refrigerant gas if required and any other maintenance task as prescribed by the contractor.

What is Ton?

Tons is otherwise known as Tons of Refrigeration; Cooling capacity of an air conditioner or refrigerator equal to 12,000 British thermal units (Btu) per hour 200 Btu per minute and denotes the amount of heat required to melt one ton of ice in 24 hours.

What is Horse Power?

The horsepower (hp) is a unit in the foot-pound-second (fps) or English system, sometimes used to express the rate at which mechanical energy is expended. It was originally defined as 550 foot-pounds per second (ft-lb/s). A power level of 1 hp is approximately equivalent to 746 watt s (W) or 0.746 kilowatt s (kW).

What is the different between the Ton and the Horsepower?

Ton of refrigeration is an S.I Unit while the Horsepower is an imperial unit. 1 Ton is equals to 4.7HP and is also equal to 3.52KW

What is a VRF system?

A VRF is a Variable Refrigerant Flow system which comprises of multiple of indoor unit to an outdoor with a certain percentage of combination ratio depending on a particular manufacturer

What is Precision Closed Control Unit?

A precision closed control unit is a special type of air conditioner that is mainly used for data centre where there is an instantaneous heat load occurrence from various equipment in the space.

What is a Chiller?

chiller is a machine that removes heat from a liquid via a vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycle. This liquid can then be circulated through a heat exchanger to cool equipment, or another process stream (such as air or process water)

What is Direct Expansion system (DX)?

A DX system is a process whereby cooled air in a room or space is directly being passed over by the cooling coil of the refrigeration plant into the room or space.

What is a Compressor?

gas compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume.

What is an Evaporator?

An Evaporator is an important component together with other major components in a refrigeration system that removes the heat and supply a cooled air into a space.

What is a Condenser?

A condenser is a heat exchanger that is used in refrigeration system to condense a fluid from its gaseous state to liquid state

What is an Expansion Valve?

An expansion valve is a component in refrigeration and air conditioning systems that controls the amount of refrigerant flow into the evaporator thereby controlling the super heat at the outlet of the evaporator.

What is an AHU?

An air handler, or air handling unit (often abbreviated to AHU), is a device used to regulate and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system.

What is FCU?

Fan Coil Unit (FCU) is a simple device consisting of a heating and/or cooling heat exchanger or ‘coil’ and fan. It is part of a HVAC system found in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

What is Dehumidifier?

dehumidifier is generally a household appliance which reduces the level of humidity in the air, usually for health or comfort reasons, or to eliminate musty odour.
